The Mars Hill Rotary Club met on May 13 at 6:30 a.m. at the Aroostook Health Center. Rotarian Richard Watson was awarded a Paul Harris Fellow during the morning meeting. He was recognized for all his help in the club.

He joined in 2006, becoming club secretary in 2007 — a post he has held ever since. He has faithfully attended almost every meeting and event and is a great asset to the club and Rotary International. Assistant District Governor Floyd Rockholt presented the award to Richard.
Rotarian Kelly Lundeen gave an update on happenings at the Aroostook Health Center. Renovations are well under way in the Skilled Unit with new windows already in place. Still to come are a new entrance, a new roofline allowing support for new heating and air conditioning going to each room, as well as renovations to the rehab area.
The rehab area offers speech, physical and occupational therapy to inpatients as well as outpatients. The Center has also been able to order a new 14-passenger van, which should be arriving soon. In a recent state survey, AHC received a five-star rating.

Plans for Homecoming 2014 are under way. This year’s events will be held on Aug. 8-10. Plans are to include various activities at the high school on Saturday afternoon. The committee is looking for crafters and more to set up booths with crafts, foods, etc. New events this year already include a photo booth; the FFA booth with baked potatoes, hotdogs and fries; and a cribbage tournament at 1 p.m. The Mars Hill Fire Department will hold a mini muster this year as well as doing the chicken barbecue dinner on Saturday.
The next planning meeting will be at the Community Center on June 9 at 6:30 p.m. All interested people are encouraged to attend.

Library happenings

The Walter T.A. Hansen Memorial Library plans to hold their annual Tag Sale on consecutive Fridays and Saturdays, June 13-14 and 20-21. Anyone willing to make donations for this sale are asked to call the library at 429-9625 to make arrangements to drop stuff off or to have it picked up. Everyone’s willingness to help with this fundraiser is greatly appreciated.
The library is also looking into the possibility of having a small Farmer’s Market in the parking lot on Saturday mornings. We would like to have an idea of what local growers and residents think about this idea. Please call the library at 429-9625 with your comments.
Renovations to the library are still in the works, with electrical upgrades and interior finishing touches still to come.
Another projects in the works is digitizing and indexing the old Mars Hill newspapers — making them available online. This would cost in the $2,000 range and ideas for raising these funds are being explored.

Tickets are one for $6 or three for $15 and can be purchased from any member of Post 118. You don’t have to be present to win, however, the drawing will be held at a post barbecue on Saturday, June 14.
