OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — The Association of Division III Independents named University of Maine-Presque Isle softball pitcher Krista Coffin as one of its student-athletes of the Month for April.
Coffin is a senior from Presque Isle who had a strong all-around month for the Owls as she hit .359 (14 hits in 39 at bats) and had an on base percentage of .419 for the Owls in 16 games. The senior also won two games in the circle and struck out 58 batters in only 43-1/3 innings.
Despite battlng injuries, she led a young UMPI squad with her gritty determination. She is among the top hitters in AD3I and ranks among the NCAA leaders in strikeouts per seven innings. The pitcher had her best start of the month against Trinity (D.C.) on April 3 as she tossed a complete game one-hitter with 12 strikeouts to seal the win.
The Association of Division III Independents consists of seven Division III independent institutions that have joined together to recognize student-athletes at independent institutions, and to provide exempted postseason championship competition.
The association recognizes outstanding athletic achievements of its student-athletes on a weekly, monthly and annual basis. The association provides statistical services for its members in seven sports.
