The victories continued for the Presque Isle girls’ varsity tennis team last week. The team wrapped up its regular season Tuesday at home against Caribou and entering the match, the Wildcats held a 10-1 record after knocking off the Vikings as well as Houlton and John Bapst on consecutive days Thursday through Saturday.
Presque Isle’s 4-1 victory over Caribou Thursday at CHS included singles wins by Hilary Boucher (8-1 over Makayla Bouchard) and Blair Bailey (8-6 over Clara Collins) and doubles triumphs by Michelle Cawley and Lora Ireland (9-7 over Bria Judd and Conner Spencer) and Sarah Morneault and Sedona Lucas (9-7 over Taylor Belanger and Malari Page).
The team’s lone loss came in first singles as Sara Gilson was bested by Caribou’s Erin Patton, 9-7.
The Wildcats were a 5-0 winner over the Shiretowners Friday and then stopped John Bapst at home the following afternoon, 4-1. Boucher and Bailey survived close singles matches, while the Cawley-Ireland combination blanked their opponent. Morneault and Lucas scored an 8-5 victory in No. 2 doubles.
In the most recent Eastern Maine Class B standings, Presque Isle stood in fifth place. Waterville and Mount Desert Island led the way with perfect 11-0 marks. Camden Hills and Ellsworth are the other teams ahead of PI.
The Wildcats will host a preliminary playoff match, scheduled for Tuesday, June 3.
The PI boys were forced to forfeit their second doubles matches to a lack of numbers each of the last three matches, and the ’Cats dropped all three to fall to 3-8 overall.
Presque Isle is on the outside of the top 12, which is necessary in order to qualify for the post-season. The team, with a 3-8 mark, was in 13th entering its final match against Caribou played Tuesday.
Highlighting the week for coach Brian Massey’s team were victories by No. 1 singles player Liam Hughes in all three matches. Hughes, a senior, started the stretch by beating Brendan Cyr of Caribou Thursday, 8-4. Following an easy 8-0 win over the Shires’ Lucas Grant Friday, Hughes edged Bapst’s Ryan Ding Saturday, 8-6.
PI’s other individual win in its 3-2 loss to the Crusaders came courtesy of Chris Carroll, who doubled up on Mike Dunning, 8-4, in the second singles match.
