The Washburn District High School Destination Imagination team ventured May 21-25 to the Global Competition in Tennessee. There they competed against 96 teams from all over the world. They not only competed in their central challenge, but also in the instant challenge.

During their stay there, Mrs. Reed and the team were able to visit a historical village and tour the Tukaleechee caverns and learn about how they were formed and discovered. The team participated in the many activities that were designed for the tournament, including the Duct Tape Ball where they took part in breaking the “Guinness Book of world Records” for the most people under one roof dressed in Duct Tape costumes; over 700 people attended.
The team interacted with representatives from NASA, the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, “National Geographic,” along with many other organizations and companies.
They would like to thank all the community members, organizations and businesses that supported them and donated to help them achieve this wonderful experience. They placed 46th out of 96 teams in their age and challenge division. They came away from this experience with new ideas, plans and a better sense of how other students their age were able to solve and develop solutions to the challenge. They hope to work hard next year and qualify to attend the 2015 Global Destination Imagination Tournament.
The purpose of Destination Imagination is to inspire and equip students to become the next generation of innovators and leaders. Annually, there are seven new standards-based challenges in: STEM, Improvisation, Visual Arts, Service Learning, and Early Learning.
Each challenge is open-ended and enables student teams to learn and experience the creative process from imagination to innovation. Academic tournaments take place around the world where teams have the opportunity to present their solutions to trained appraisers. Students have fun and gain confidence in their ability to solve any challenge. In working to solve challenges, teams learn 21st-Century skills (creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, communication, citizenship and courage) to build on their unique strengths.  You can learn more about Destination Imagination and see additional photos at MSAD45.net.

Rotary Club

A recent speaker at the Washburn Rotary Club’s weekly meeting was Jeremiah Sjoberg, nephew of Rotarian Dana Woodman. Jeremiah graduated from Washburn District High School and now owns a business offering photography and videography services, Jeremiah Sjoberg Photography, LLC. He showed the club several videos he has made and also many of his photographs, which the club members enjoyed immensely.
Last Wednesday after their regular meeting, several members of the Washburn Rotary Club drove to the Perham Cemetery to help the White family place flags on the veterans’ graves.
