Houlton Native Enters New Field – Meden E. Smith, formerly of Houlton and a recognized educator of some 20 years’ standing, has established and developed over the past four years the first and only accredited, year-’round school of remedial education in New England, Harmon Hall in York Harbor.
The need for such a school, it was reported, has been apparent to educators who, during the past eight or ten years, have become acutely aware of a consistent increase into the thousands of “children who fail’ in one or more subjects each year.
Houlton Man Flies To Norfolk Office – You hear plenty these days about pilots learning to fly for pleasure. Not so much about the business end of travel with your own plane. Last week at the airport, however, M. Jerome Dickinson of Houlton and Norfolk, Va., completed a round trip between these points. He works out of Houlton but the factory of the fertilizer company he represents is located in Norfolk.

Graduates From Basic Training – Parris ISland, S.C. – Marine Pfc. William S. Adams Jr., son of Mr.. and Mrs. William S. Adams Sr. of Houlton, graduated from basic training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot here.
Joins The Waves– Miss Peggy Kenney, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Linwood Kenney of Houlton, has joined the Waves of the United States Navy. She is presently undergoing basic training at Orlando FL. Miss Kenney attended school at Mapleton and PResque Isle. She is originally from Mapleton, and is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Litchrod Washburn.

McGary honored as 1998 good citizen at Southside – With the current tensions that bombard youth in today’s school systems, it’s refreshing to see a student who rises above the fray of peer pressure to be a friend to other students by sharing her warm smile and considerate attitude.Sixth grader, Brittany McGary demonstrates those qualities and was recognized as Southside School’s 1998 Good Citizen. McGary is the daughter of Wendy and Vaughn Webb and Ronnie McGary of Houlton.
