75 Years Ago – June 24, 1948

Gloria Dow Is Chosen To Be Miss Houlton – Miss Gloria Dow, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry H. Down, inherited the crown of “Miss Houlton of 1948” from Miss Gennette MacNair, who had worn it for the past year, at ceremonies held last night in the Putnam Gymnasium.

Before an applauding audience of more than 900 the comely junior at the University of Maine graciously acknowledged her title and expressed regret that all of the other ten contestants could not have been similarly honored. She will represent Houlton at the Potato Blossom Festival in Van Buren, July 21.

Jr. Red Sox Beat Fair St. In Middle League, 7-6 – In a Middle League game the Junior Red Sox edged the Fair Street Rockets, 7-6, in a well-played ball game. With two men out, Clough reached first on an error, then stole third. Van Tassel reached first on an error, scoring Clough for the winning run. Bernard, Morse and Ellis were the heavy hitters for the losing team. A baseball school will be held Thursday afternoon, July 1, at one. Jim DiFrederico said that the instruction will be on the technique of batting. This season will be for ball players of the teams in the summer leagues.

50 Years Ago  – June 27, 1973

Houlton Student Receives Degree At Northeastern– Paul W. Hannigan of High Street received a bachelor of Science degree from the College of Engineering at Northeastern University in Boston during the 71st annual commencement exercises June 17 in the Boston Garden. Northeastern President Asa S. Knowles delivered an address to members of the graduating class and 4,408 degrees were awarded.

Roach graduates with recognition – Stephen A. Roach, son of Mr. and MRs. Asa H. Roach of Houlton graduated June 4 from Boston College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science. Mr. Roach graduated Magna Cum Laude and Magna Cum Laude and received department honors in political science. During his junior year he studied abroad under the Institute of European Studies at the University of Vienna in Austria. 

25 Years Ago – July 15, 1998

Tennis player heads for Nationals – Eryn Moakler of Houlton is just like any other young teenage girl. She attends school, does her homework and spends time with her family and friends. Yet, there’s one thing that makes her just a little bit extraordinary: she’s the seventh ranked tennis player in New England in the Girls 14 and under category. Although she will only be entering the eighth grade next year at the Greater Houlton Christian Academy, Eryn has already made her mark in the tennis world. During her tournament appearances, Eryn usually placed in fifth or sixth position, with an occasional first or second finish against 70 other competitors. She’s also brought home 11 trophies for winning matches.

Senior golf tourney draws 146 – The Upper St. John Valley Senior Golf Association held its second season tournament in Mars Hill on July 8 with 146 golfers participating in the event. Marc Chasse of Fort Kent scored a hole-in-one in whole number six,  which us a 125 yards, and it was witnessed by Tim Bliss of Hartland, Ted Tornquist of Caribou and Moe Collins of Presque Isle. The overall gross winner was Elmer Pelletier of Fort Kent with a score of 77, and overall net winner was Robert McCrea of Mars Hill with a 64.
