New tribal councilors sworn into office

LITTLETON, Maine – The Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians welcomed two incumbents and one new member to its tribal council Tuesday, May 2, during a special ceremony.

Held at the Maliseet Community Center, Tribal Chief Clarissa Sabattis received the oath of office from the new council members – Joshua Toner, Suzanne Desiderio and Catherine St. John. 

A total of 183 ballots were received for this year’s election, held Saturday, April 29. Toner received 154 votes, while Desiderio collected 99 votes and St. John tallied 75 votes. Others running for office were Roger Flewelling and William Tompkins. 

All three were elected to four-year terms on the tribal council. The new councilors join Crystal Tucker, John Flewelling and Beth Aucoin on the six-member board.
