Presque Isle beats out Houlton in softball and baseball games

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — It was a stellar day for the Presque Isle Wildcats with May 18 wins for the boys varsity baseball team of 11-1 and girls softball 3-1 over the Houlton Shires.

The two Class B games took place simultaneously with fans cheering for their teams.

Wildcat Emily Straetz scored the first home run in the bottom of the first inning with Astra Laughton and Georganna Curtis scoring an additional two points in the bottom of the third inning to put Presque Isle ahead 3-0.

Shires player Calli Sylvia scored the only point for Houlton during the top of the fifth inning, but the Shires couldn’t find their stride for the rest of the game.

Curtis had an average at bat of 0.500 for Presque Isle and has seen the most runs batted in at 11 for the season, while her teammate Laughton averaged an 0.448 with an impressive 11 runs for the season.

The Presque Isle girls softball rounded out their season at 5-5 as they look forward to this weekend’s double header home game against Hermon on Saturday.

On the baseball field, the Presque Isle Wildcats boys varsity baseball team scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Houlton only scored one point at the top of the fourth inning, while the Wildcats extended their lead further with four more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Another run was scored in the bottom of the fifth inning to trigger a mercy rule to end the game.

Ryan Blackstone had the most runs batted in at three for the game, while Michael Langley, Cooper Boinske, and Ben Beaulieu each had two runs scored for Presque Isle.

Some of the top sluggers for the Wildcats have been Evan Chapman with a .593 batting average, Breygan Mahan with a .519, and Cooper Boinske with a .484. Chapman is leading the Class B league with 19 stolen bases.

Presque Isle boys varsity baseball are now 5-6 in the Class B season with a double header home game against Hermon on Saturday.
