Saturday marked the end of the varsity track and field season as state championship meets were held, with a local relay team and high jumper able to come away with titles.
At Dover-Foxcroft, Washburn’s 4×100-meter relay team, consisting of Carsyn and Tori Koch, Joan Overman and Tyra Shaw, was the Class C winner with a time of 51.8 seconds, which was 78/100ths of a second faster than the runner-up team from Traip Academy in Kittery.
Carsyn Koch also won the high jump by clearing 5 feet, 5-1/2 inches, establishing a new Class C state record which had stood for 18 years.
Washburn scored 20 points on the day, placing 14th out of 35 teams. Fort Fairfield also had female athletes competing, but none placed. Orono captured the team title with 102 points.
In the boys’ meet, Fort Fairfield scored six points behind a pair of fifth-place finishes by Caleb Daigle in both the 400 and the 200. Daigle ran the 400 in 53.7 seconds and the 200 in 23.95 seconds.
Lisbon was the team champion in Class C with 67 points, with Orono taking second with 61.
At Brewer, Presque Isle competed in the Class B event. The Presque Isle boys recorded three points on the day, with senior Mitchell Ayotte providing those by placing sixth in the high jump by clearing 5 feet, 10 inches and taking seventh in the long jump with a mark of 19 feet, 8-3/4 inches.
The Wildcats participated in the girls’ meet, but had nobody place in the top seven and therefore did not figure in the scoring.
Sophomore thrower Regan Nelson came the closest, placing eighth in the shot put with a mark of 30 feet, 4-1/2 inches.
The Waterville boys and girls were the Class B team champions.
