FORT KENT, Maine — Bogan Books will participate in the 10th anniversary of Independent Bookstore Day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 29.
“Independent Bookstore Day is one of our favorite days. It celebrates both the bookseller and the book buyer. We are so excited to have participated for the last five years and look forward to many more,” said Heidi Carter, owner of Bogan Books.
Independent Bookstore Day (IBD) was established in 2013 to promote, celebrate, and highlight the value of Independent bookstores and their communities. The day has been observed on the last Saturday of April every year since 2013. This year more than 900 stores will join in across the country, Carter said.
The local bookstore will have special events and will highlight signed books and special book themes, including longtime children’s author Richard Scarey.
The special day allows the local store to thank the community that supports it all year through, Carter said.
“With abundant online opportunities, we know our customers make a conscious effort to support us. It was always my hope when I opened Bogan Books that the community would feel like the bookshop was not just mine, but it was theirs, too,” she said. “The fact that we are still open, after facing several struggles including a pandemic, is proof that Bogan Books is Fort Kent’s bookshop. I am happy to have a day dedicated to celebrating that.”
Independent Bookstore Day is organized by the American Booksellers Association, a national not-for-profit trade organization that works with booksellers and industry partners to ensure the success and profitability of independently owned book retailers.
Bogan Books opened in Fort Kent in 2018 and is on America’s First Mile, the northern terminus of U.S. Route 1, located at at 130 West Main St. The small store offers a wide breadth of genres with special focus on Maine authors and themes.
