ST. AGATHA, Maine — The tiny town of St. Agatha will see one of its own shine her talents on the soccer pitch at Thomas College come fall.
Wisdom High School senior Abbie Lerman has committed to play for the Thomas College Terriers women’s soccer team.
Lerman has been a standout athlete in multiple sports at Wisdom, where she has also excelled academically. She will study business administration at the Waterville school.
“I chose Thomas College because they have an amazing business program,” Lerman said. “I will miss many people up home, but this is a great opportunity that I could not pass up.”
Lerman plays soccer, basketball, softball and volleyball for the Wisdom Pioneers. She is also president of the National Honor Society, student council and Class of 2023.
Among multiple achievements, Lerman was the 2022 female recipient of the Heisman High School Scholarship for Maine. She scored her 100th career soccer goal while still a junior.
Lerman also received Wisdom’s Maine Principal’s Award and was selected as Wisdom’s Aroostook League Scholar-Athlete for 2023.
Her parents are Tammie and Doug Lerman. Her sister, Ava Lerman, is a freshman at Wisdom.
Wisdom girls soccer coach Peter Clavette has coached Lerman in various soccer programs since she was 11 years old.
“She is one of the most gifted soccer players I have ever had the privilege of coaching; her level of effort and focus is amazing,” Clavette said. “Abbie’s work ethic is next level in how she approaches all aspects of the game, and this will ensure that her high school success will most certainly follow her to the college pitch. She’s an athlete who elevates everyone’s game through her sheer love of the sport itself.”
Lerman also plays for the premier club team Dutch Soccer Academy in the Warren/Rockland area, where she has traveled every Sunday from November to June since eighth grade.
Tammie Lerman said she came to cherish the weekly trips to Waterville with her daughter.
“I wouldn’t have traded that time for anything in the world,” she said, then quipped, “Imagine she’s confined in a vehicle with me five hours one way. She has to listen to me and all my lectures.”
Lerman was approached for potential recruitment by several schools outside Maine, but chose to stay home, her mother said.
“She would like to continue to support Wisdom’s athletics, and she’s hoping her schedule will allow her to attend some of her sister’s games,” Tammie Lerman said.
Abbie Lerman said her sister has been there for her through it all. She also said Clavette, her teammates and her parents have been instrumental in her success.
“Everyone has all been very supportive over my success, and I couldn’t have done it without them,” she said.
Tammie Lerman said she and her husband are thrilled their daughter chose Thomas College in her home state.
“We are proud of her and everything she has accomplished throughout her high school years — not only athletically, but also academically,” Tammie Lerman said.
