ST. AGATHA, Maine — Wisdom Middle High School Principal Cheryl Hallowell has announced that senior Abigail Lerman of St. Agatha has been selected to receive the 2023 MPA Principal’s Award.
Lerman is the daughter of Tammie and Doug Lerman.
The award is sponsored by the Maine Principals’ Association and is given each year in recognition of a senior’s academic achievement and citizenship during their years in high school. This award is presented in more than 100 Maine public and private high schools by member principals of the MPA, the professional association that represents Maine’s school administrators.
Lerman has always had an active role in the leadership at Wisdom Middle High School. She is currently the president for the school’s chapter of the National Honor Society, president of her senior class, and president of the student council. She has served as the student representative on the SAD 33 Board of Directors for the past two years.
“Abbie has consistently been one of Wisdom’s top school citizens. She is an example of positive school leadership,” Hallowell said.
During her four years at Wisdom, Lerman has taken part in many extracurricular activities. She was a five-year member of the varsity soccer and basketball teams, earning All-Aroostook honors multiple times. She has also played on the softball and volleyball teams. She received the Butch Shaw Soccer Award for the past three seasons.
She was selected as the girls’ high school Heisman Scholarship Award winner for the state of Maine in 2022. She has been a high-honors student while taking numerous Early College courses. She is among the top-ranked students in her class.
After graduation, she plans to pursue studies in business administration.
Outside of school, Lerman has volunteered at the food pantries at Wisdom and Our Lady of the Valley. She has been an altar server at her church and has volunteered with the Special Olympics and the St. Agatha Recreation Department.
“Abbie is a strong role model at school and in the community. She has found a way to balance high academic standards, extracurricular activities, and community involvement,” Hallowell said.
Lerman and Hallowell are invited to attend the Honors Luncheon on April 1 in Brewer. At the conclusion of the luncheon, drawings will be held for ten $1,000 scholarships.
