Samuel G. Bacon, of Easton, graduated with honors from the United States Coast Guard Academy on May 21, earning a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and a commission as a Coast Guard officer with the rank of ensign.
Bacon, a 2009 graduate of Easton High School, accepted an appointment to attend the Coast Guard Academy and was sworn in as a member of the Class of 2014 on June 28, 2010. He is believed to be the first ever USCGA graduate from Easton and the first in decades from Aroostook County.
Recognized as one of the best engineering schools in the country, the United States Coast Guard Academy is the smallest of our nation’s five military service academies. Admission to the Coast Guard Academy is extremely competitive and the four-year program is challenging to complete. Academy selection criteria are stringent and consist of several factors including academic performance, athletic performance, demonstrated leadership potential and community involvement.
The entering Class of 2014 was comprised of 290 appointees chosen from a pool of approximately 4,500 applicants, with 214 cadets eventually receiving degrees and commissions. U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson delivered the commencement address.
Bacon will begin his five-year active-duty commitment assigned to the Coast Guard Cutter “Midgett” in Seattle, Wash. USCGC Midgett’s responsibilities include homeland security, search and rescue, maritime law enforcement, and alien migrant interdiction operations, as well as maintaining military readiness in support of our NATO allies and the U.S. Navy. One of 10 high-endurance cutters on the West Coast, her normal patrol areas include the Bering Sea, Gulf of Alaska and Central American waters, enforcing the Magnuson Fishery Conservation and Management Act (200-mile limit) and drug interdiction laws.
Bacon joins a crew of 24 officers and 160 enlisted men and women. Bacon is the son of Randy and Paula Bacon of Easton.
Turner receives EHS Principal’s Award
Hunter Turner, a senior at Easton Junior Senior High School, has been selected to receive the 2014 Principal’s Award, according to Principal Cameron Adams. The award, sponsored by the Maine Principals’ Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic achievement and citizenship.
“Hunter always has a smile on his face and it is contagious. Hunter’s work ethic and attitude provides a strong foundation for his future. Hunter has the respect of his peers and teachers alike. I’ve had the opportunity to work along side Hunter and his willingness to listen and learn is outstanding,” Principal Adams noted in making the award. “He is very deserving of this recognition.”
Hunter and other winners were honored at an Honors Luncheon at the Spectacular Event Center in Bangor, which recognizes these outstanding students with the presentation of an individual plaque and the awarding of five $1,000 scholarships.
