Michaud praises DOT order
re-affirming air service for PI
PRESQUE ISLE — U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud is praising the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) decision to re-select Peninsula Airways for two years of subsidized essential air service between Presque Isle and Boston. The term runs from July 1, 2014 through June 30, 2016 at an annual subsidy of just over $4.7 million. The DOT’s order also calls for PenAir to continue providing subsidy-free essential air service to Bar Harbor.
“I’m pleased the Department of Transportation is renewing its commitment to ensuring air service in both Bar Harbor and Presque Isle,” said Michaud. “I have been committed to advocating for this service because I know how important it is for Mainers — particularly in more rural areas — to have affordable and convenient access to air service that connects them to points outside of the state. We also know that these services are critical to maintaining vibrant local economies. It’s good news that the DOT is continuing to demonstrate an understanding of how vital these flights are for our state.”
The DOT order calls for 19 weekly non-stop, round trips from Presque Isle. In Bar Harbor, the PenAir service will complement the year-round subsidized service currently provided by Cape Air.
