County Challenge Series standings

   The County Challenge Series for road racing is under way for another year.    Two of the series races have already taken place — the Wild Katahdin Trust Snow Run in Houlton Feb. 15 and the UMPI Spring Runoff in Presque Isle on April 12. The next race will take place Sunday in Caribou, as the S.W. Collins Company 5K is on the slate.
The other races that are part of the series are the Musterd Mile in Caribou July 11, the Potato Blossom 5-Miler in Fort Fairfield July 19, the County Open Half Marathon in Island Falls Aug. 16 and the Caribou Labor Day Road Race Sept. 1.
Through the first two events, Chris Rines of Houlton holds the lead in the men’s overall standings with 18 points. He is followed closely by Shawn Berry, who has 15, with Curtis Wheeler of Caribou in third with 12.
Angela Ewings of Littleton leads the way among women with 14 points. Kim Wright of Mapleton and Tracy Guerrette of St. Agatha are tied for second with 11.
Age division leaders are: 14 and under male, Dustin Alward, 11 points; 15-18 male, Lucas Kinney, 11; 19-29 male, Rines, 18; 30-39 male, Berry, 22; 40-49 male, Craig Dubay, 18; 50-59 male, Leo Kashian, 22; 60-69 male, Larry Tonzi, 22; and 70 and older male, Art Thompson, 11.
Also, 14 and under female, Teagan Ewings and Libby Moreau (tie), 11; 15-18 female, Sarah Doak, 11; 19-29 female, Frankie White and Marie Beckum (tie), 11; 30-39 female, Nicole Hanscom and Guerette (tie), 11; 40-49 female, Ewings, 20; 50-59 female, Janice Wright and Kim Wright (tie), 11; and 60-69 female, Connie McLellan, 11.
Janna Shaw and Michelle Bragdon have 11 points each as the walkers’ leaders.
Kim Wright and P.J. Gorneault are the defending series champions. Ewings has won 12 women’s titles since the series began in 1983, while Bob Everett owns a record five championships in the men’s division.
