100 Years Ago – August 2, 1923
Field artillery batteries left for camps — A special train left Caribou Saturday morning about six o’clock for Augusta, Maine, and had as its passengers the Caribou battery. On its way down the line, it picked up Presque Isle, Fort Fairfield and Houlton batteries. The boys spent two weeks in training at the camps in Augusta. Capt. Walter Cassidy was in charge of the Presque Isle battery.
75 Years Ago – July 29, 1948
Corporators of hospital elected — The corporate members of the Presque Isle General hospital at their annual meeting Tuesday evening reelected five of their members for five-year terms and three trustees for three-year terms, and heard reports which indicated many improvements in the hospital plant and its operation during the previous year., with at least two major plant improvements still needed. Stewart Donahue, Mrs. Lloyd Greenlaw, Abram Crouse, DAvid Abbott, and Elmer S. Ingalls were reelected as corporate members, while Philip A. Christie, Vaughn W. Parsons, and Lawrence H. Alline were named to succeed themselves on the board of trustees.
Committees for Lions announced — Committees for the Presque Isle Lions Club for the coming year were announced by Eugene K. Rowe, president. The committees functioning under the vice presidents, Arthur K. Dame, J. Howard Larracey, and Kenneth B. Colbath, as indicated in the following list: Administrative committees: Attendance (Dame), Roy Smith, chairman, John Riley, Darrell Whittaker, Fay Green, Sherwood Kelso, Seymour Moskowitz. Constitutions and By-Laws (Larracey), Ralph A. Hanna, chairman, Joseph LaBree, James Dubay, Carl Moskowitz, James Roche. Finance (Dame), Harvey F. 50 Years Ago – August 1, 1973
Estes honored — Mrs. Janet Estes of Taterstate Frozen Foods (Division of Agway, Inc.) was honored by her fellow employees at the Swamp Fox Coach and Eight Restaurant Wednesday, July 25. Mrs. Estes started with Taterstate Frozen Foods in December 1966 as a machine operator and through the previous seven years had become a supervisor and an accountant. She was moving to Connecticut where her husband had acquired new employment. Those attending were Betty Tardiff, Arlene Cole, Sandra Sperrey, Diane Young, Lynn Flewelling, Grace Adams and Patricia Marcoux.
Christened with Champagne — Aucoin’s Restaurant opened its redecorated premises for business Saturday, July 28, but the restaurant was christened at a party held there the evening before. Hundreds of people came to the party to partake of free champagne served by waitresses dressed in Persian costumes.
Collins elected — Douglas Collins, M.D. of Caribou, was elected president of Aroostook Health Services Development, Inc., at the agency’s annual Board meeting July 23. The agency is a State designated areawide Comprehensive Health Planning Region V, which includes all of Aroostook County and northern portions of Washington and Penobscot counties. Members of the Board of Directors commended the outstanding leadership and service of Curtis S. McQuarrie, past president.

Tournament winners — The Easton Field Days Golf Tournament, held at the West Ridge Road Golf Course was won for the third year in a row by Barry and Gloria Richardson and Mickey Perry of Texas. Second place went to Jack Dionne, Scott Cote and Dan Desmond. Third place went to Larry Nichols of Old Orchard Beach, and Melanie and Chris Campbell. Fourth place went to James Bruce, Paul Sprague and J.R. Parody. Barry, Gloria and Micky shot an 8 under 100 in the two day event. Milbury was very appreciative of the participation of both the contestants and the businesses who made donations.
Hedrich featured in the magazine — “People, Places & Plants” featured two Presque Isle boys on the cover that hit newsstands. The 13th edition of the gardening magazine from Maine depicted Danny and Joe Hedrich IV of Presque Isle standing next to a giant pumpkin grown by their father and grandfather. An article inside the magazine interviewed Joe Hedrich III, who helped grow the second largest pumpkins in New England in 1994 and 1995. “We think readers will really get a kick out of the story,” said publisher Paul Tukey. “Joe had grown two of the top 20 largest pumpkins in the history of New England all the way up in Presque Isle, Maine. That dispels the myth that people can’t garden north of Portland.”
Honored teacher — Jennifer York, a teacher at Zippel Elementary School, received the Time-Warner National Teacher Award for her class’ project on environmental awareness and education. York was one of 15 teachers nationwide to win the honor. State Rep. Gary O’Neal, D-Limestone, State Rep. Mabel Desmond, D-Mapleton, and Time-Warner Manager Barry McCrum presented York with the state Legislature proclamation.
