75 Years Ago – September 9, 1948
Six Jets To Roar Into Houlton This Weekend for Third Annual GAP Northern Maine Air Show – Roaring up from Dow FIeld at speeds of approximately 10 miles a minute, six Thunderjets, the faster-than-sound fighter planes of the U. S. Army Air Force, will arrive at Houlton for the Third Annual Northern Maine Air Show at Houlton Airport, two Saturday morning and a flight of four the next day. The two F-84’s (jets) due here at 10 a.m. Saturday, will remain on display both days as a feature of the numerous events planned to fill a busy schedule of air activity at Houlton’s million-dollar airport.
Patten Takes 2nd In Howland Series – Vic Palmer set the visiting Howland AC down with one run on six hits to avenge a previous day’s set back as Patten smothered Howland 6 to 1. In the first game, played at Howland, the Eastern Maine League team scored four runs in the seventh inning of a seven inning twilight game to edge Patten 5 to 4.
50 Years Ago – September 12, 1973
Awarded Commendation – Captain Mark W. Faulk stationed in Okinawa, has been awarded the Army Commendation Medal for Meritorious services from March 19,19736 to August 4, 1973. Captain Faulk had graduated from Houlton High School in 1965 and from the University of Maine in 1969. He is a member of Special Forces assigned to the 441 Military Intelligence Detachment. He has served in various capacities and posts while in the Far East, including Viet Nam. He studied Russian, and also studied Chinese for a year at the Defense Language Institute at Monterey, California. His wife Emily is with him in Okinawa. She is a 1969 graduate of the University of Maine and her home was in LIvermore Falls.
25 Years Ago – September 30, 1998
Enlist in Air Force – Shona L. Ireland of Haynesville, and Mark C. Whited of Houlton have recently enlisted in the Air Force’s Delayed Enlistment Program. A 1994 graduate of Hodgdon High school, Ireland is scheduled to attend Air Force basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas, on April 29, 1999. Also a 1998 graduate of Hodgdon High School, Whited was scheduled to attend Air Force basic training at the same place on August 26, 1998.
Completes Basic Training – Marine Pvt. Kelly L. Lovett, daughter of Bonnie B and Paul Lovett Sr. of Sherman Station, recently completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C. Lovett successfully completed 12 weeks of training designed to challenge new Marine recruits both physically and mentally.
