MADAWASKA, Maine — Police on Friday were alerted to counterfeit bills being used in Madawaska. They received two $20 bills with the words “Copy Money” written on the front and back.
Police alerted the public via social media, reminding residents to check their money before using it, and also to report any suspicious currency to the department.
Madawaska Police Sgt. Sam Dechaine said on Monday that they have not received any more counterfeit bills since issuing the Friday alert. The two bills were found at Bob’s Service Center, a gas station and convenience store on Main Street.
This is not the first time the town has seen counterfeit money.
“It happens every once in a while,” Dechaine said. “Sometimes it’s every two or three months and sometimes it’s a six-month stretch.”
Aside from the writing on the money, sometimes counterfeit bills will have an unusual texture or foreign writing, Dechaine said.
He said the best thing the public can do is to report any counterfeit bills to the department as soon as they can.
