75 Years Ago – October 7, 1948

Houlton Nurse Officer Of State Association – Miss Ruby Bull, R.N., who was recently elected vice-president of the northern district of the Maine State Nurses Association, was elected second vice-president of the state organization at the annual meeting of the group which was held Monday and Tuesday in Bangor. Miss Bull is the first Houlton nurse to be honored by the state association with high office, according to records. The meeting was held on the 75th anniversary of the nurses in the United States and honor was paid to Linda Richards on the Diamond Jubilee of her becoming the first trained nurse in this country. Among speakers at the meeting was Dr. Payson Smith, noted educator and former commissioner of education for the State of Massachusetts.

Houlton High Girls Form Bowling Team Schedule –  The first meeting of the girls bowling team of Houlton High School was held Tuesday and election of officers was held. Those elected were: president, Joyce Gray; vice-president, Theresa Skehan; secretary-treasurer, Amy Lou Tomplins. Various other committees were selected with the executive board consisting of Joyce McKay and Joyce Huggard; the supper committee, Marie Way and Jackie Riley with Mary Shaw chairman, and Connie Dobbins news reporter. 

50 Years Ago – October 10, 1976

Bean Named Hospital Administrator – The Board of Trustees of Houlton Regional Hospital has announced the appointment of Bradley Craig Bean as Administrator of Houlton Regional Hospital, replacing Sister Mary Corinne who resigned from the position. Mr. Bean graduated from Siena College in 1963 with a Bachelor of Science degree in economics. He studied hospital administration at the University of Minnesota and served his administrative residence at Saint Luke’s Hospital in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. 

East Grand Team WIns Its First Soccer Contest –  East Grand Junior High of Danforth played their first soccer game over Tuesday, gathering a win over Wytopitlock Junior High, 4-0. The first period goals by Kevin Fredette and JOhn Page proved all the scoring power necessary for the win. Goals were also credited to Larry Malone on a penalty kick, and to Les Begin. Wade Preston picked up to assist for the East Grand Team.

25 Years Ago – October 28, 1998

Longstaff named new code officer – The town of Houlton has a new code enforcement officer. Brian Longstaff, who formerly was the general manager of operations at Steelstone Industries, will begin his new position next Monday. He replaces Marc Russell, who accepted a job at the State Planning Office in Augusta. Longstaff received his associate’s degree in drafting technology from Northern Maine Technical College in 1979. He has also worked for two local engineering firms, three registered land surveyors and a local building developer. 

McElwee recognized as new attorney at law – Darcie N. McElwee, now of Bangor, was sworn in as an attorney of the Maine Bar on Oct. 6, in Houlton, by the Hon. James P. Archibald, active retired justice of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court. The ceremony took place in the Superior Courtroom of the Aroostook County Courthouse, with Superior Court Justice Hon. Paul T. Pierson also participated.
