CARIBOU, Maine — The Aroostook Veterans Advocacy Committee will meet in the Chan Center at Cary Medical Center on Saturday, November 18 from 10:30 a.m. to noon. The AVAC was formed several years ago as a voice for Aroostook County veterans. During the effort to close the Caribou Maine Veterans Home the AVAC was very active in working to prevent the closure. Their efforts along with others, including State Senate President Troy Jackson, D-Allagash, helped to save the veterans home.
The AVAC is made up of representatives from various veterans organizations. Vaughn Hardacker, president of the organization, said that with traditional veterans organizations dropping in numbers the AVAC can be a strong voice of advocacy for all veterans.
“By bringing veterans from a variety of service organizations we can speak in one voice in support of veterans issues,” said Hardacker. “We also want to keep County veterans informed as to the changes in benefits and other issues that impact them.”
The November 18 meeting is open to all veterans. Items to be discussed include update on the Caribou Maine Veterans Home, news on the VA clinic in Caribou, benefits update and other business. For more information contact Vaughn Hardacker at vhardacker@gmail.com.
