115 Years Ago – Oct. 29, 1908
First time ever — On Oct. 15, Mr. W. T. Good, the well known potato buyer, shipped a carload of cabbage to Boston, containing 13 tons, most of which he raised. This is a new departure for Aroostook, and as far as we know is the first car of cabbage ever shipped out of Aroostook county.
Work has been completed — S. W. Brown has completely remodeled and renovated his building on Broadway, opposite the B. & A. station, and opened an up-to-date restaurant. The dining room, very neat and attractive, has been freshly papered and painted, also new hardwood floors laid. Mr. Brown reports a good run of business.
100 Years Ago – Nov. 1, 1923
Improvements being made — Chas. T. Bishop, who owns the building in which the post office is located, has made many alterations and improvements during the past summer, building on an addition, thus giving the rural mail carriers a warm room in which to assort their mail, giving a private room for the postmaster and also putting in a good heating plant. This week he has been putting in concrete steps.
The law is the law — The law about returning from Canada by team or automobile, without going through certain specified and prescribed regulations and formalities, was found by one man during the past week to be no joke, that the law had ‘teeth’ in it, as he had to pay a fine of $110 for the offense.
75 Years Ago – Oct. 28, 1948
John A. Slowe named new manager for Caribou Vaughan House — John A. Slowe, of Athens, Maine, and formerly of Boston, has assumed the new managerial position of Caribou’s Vaughan House, it was announced by hotel directors. Slowe, for 23 years, has been engaged in hotel work throughout New York, Boston and Maine. He comes here directly from the Northeastland Hotel in Presque Isle where he had worked for four months.
Work at the post office expands — Due to the great increase in parcel post business at the local post office, it has become necessary to hire a second panel truck for use in delivering, relaying and collecting mail, Floyd A. Smith, local postmaster, said Tuesday. He stated that the parcel post business has shown a marked increase over the previous year and that city delivery service has recently been increased to cover most of the newly built sections of the town.

Obstetrician/gynecologist joins Cary and Pines — Frian Wall, M. D. and his wife Chris recently visited Caribou to finalize plans to move Dr. Wall’s OB/GYN practice to Caribou. Dr. Wall will join Pines Health Services and will be in the active medical staff at Cary Medical Center. Joining Dr. and Mrs. Wall is Steven Nadeau. M. D., President of the Medical Staff at Cary Medical Center and Carl Flynn, M. D., Medical Advisor for Pines Health Services.
New Sweden couple honored for 50 years — Marshall and Clarice Helstrom of New Sweden celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with family and friends at the VFW Hall in Caribou on Aug. 8. A smorgasbord celebration was hosted by their daughters and son-in-laws Nuel and Elaine Stroheker of Eliot, Billis and Joyce Maxwell of Brewer, grandsons Eric Stroheker and his wife Rachael of Kittery, Brent Stroheker of Eliot, Gill Maxwell, Jr. of Brewer, and great grandchildren Sheldon Brent and Kasie Lynn Stroheker of Kittery. The Helstrom’s were married Feb. 20, 1948 in New Sweden by Pastor Lyndoll.
