Robbins to Attend N.Y. Parley as Maine Agent – Chauncey Robbins will spend next week in New York City on business for the State of Maine and for the Houlton Chamber of Commerce. As a member of the Maine Commission on Interstate Cooperation, Mr. Robbins will attend the 13th Annual Regional Highway and Motor Vehicle Conference to be held at the Hotel Roosevelt next Thursday and Friday. He is a member of the continuing committees on State Safety Programs and on Safety Education and will reside at a conference panel discussion on Uniform State School Bus Laws.
Houlton Marks Armistice Day At Ceremonial – Timed to start at 11, that hour of November 11, 1948, when an Armistice signed in Germany brought to an end the first World War, Houlton’s celebration of Armistice Day Thursday will be held at the Temple Theatre. There will be a varied program following the parade of Battery B, 152nd Field Artillery, National Guard, with equipment from the Airport to the theater. Guns mounted in Market Square, where double parking will be supervised by the Houlton Police Department, the National Guardsmen, except for members on detail with the artillery pieces, will attend the observance. Memorial exercises will be conducted under supervision of Commander Joseph Eberle, of Col. Frank M. Hume Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Commander Rellon Cole of Chester L. Briggs Post, American Legion.

FHA Girls Attend County Session At Presque Isle – Future homemakers of Houlton High School attended the County FHA convention Saturday at Presque Isle High School. Eight schools in Aroostook County were represented. Girls attending the convention were Debbie Smith, Donna Perfitt, Susan Ellis, Molly Ingraham, Annette McAfee, Rachel Beals, Gail Crawford, Katrina Melvin and Janice Brown.
Youth For Hospital Give $1,111 To Campaign Drive – A check for $1,111.50 has been presented to Alan H. Clark, chairman of the Houlton Regional Building Fund Campaign. This was the result of months of work, time and effort exerted by the Youth for Houlton Regional Hospital, young people working together to help Southern Aroostook have the much needed medical facility. The project started in July with a telethon sponsored by WHOU radio to raise money to finance a carnival. Karen St. Peter and Andy Grant were co-chairmen, Ann Matthews was treasurer and adult advisors were Gabe and Carol Guerriari, the Rev. Ashton Nickerson and his wife Betty, Scott Emack and Albro Cowperthwaite.

Littleton man named ‘Farmer of the Year’ – The Maine Potato Board will honor two industry leaders at its annual meeting in January. Robert Bartlett of Littleton has been named 1998 Farm of the year, while Kendall Shaw of Fort Fairfield is the 1998 Young Farmer of the Year.
Houlton’s first ever holiday light parade was a success – Friday evening found Shiretowners in the midst of their very first Christmas light parade. The 11 floats began the route from the parking lot of the Houlton Plaza. Prior to the parade, entrants adjusted lights, fiddled with portable generators and put the last minute touches on their floats as they began the exodus to downtown Houlton.
