75 Years Ago November 25, 1948

Hess Named To B & A Law Staff – General Counsel Henry J. Hart of the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad has officially announced the appointment of John E. Hess of Houlton as attorney for the railroad and its subsidiary companies. Mr. Hess, who has been a resident of Houlton for the past 16 years, was born in Philadelphia. He had graduated from Ricker Classical Institute in the class of 1939 with valedictorian honors and from Bowdoin College in 1943 with the degree of Bachelor of Arts and Magna Cum Laude Honors. He also graduated from Harvard Law School in 1948 and was admitted to the Maine bar at Houlton two weeks ago. Prior to his admission to practice, he served as special assistant in the railroad’s law department.

Houlton H.S. Girls Out To Win Bowling Honors – Last week tryouts were held for the Houlton High girls’ varsity bowling team. Many girls went out for this sport, thus making it rather difficult to eliminate. After much deliberation, the following girls were chosen: Joyce Gray, Geneva Rossignol, Teresa Skehan, Norma smith, Amy Tompkins, Dolores Bell, Carole Paradis, and Mary Shaw. Joanne Thomas is manager. This group is making fine progress under the able coaching of Virginia Dickinson. Plans are being made for many future games, the first match to be held at Presque Isle. 

50 Years Ago November 28, 1973

Barbara Burton Selected As Houlton’s Junior Miss – Miss Barbara Burton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Burton of Houlton was crowned Houlton’s Junior Miss at the Pageant Saturday evening sponsored by the Business and Professional Women’s Club at the Houlton High School auditorium. Janet E. Longstaff, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Longstaff of Houlton was the first runner-up for the title and if for any reason the reigning queen must relinquish her title, she would assume the duties of the Junior Miss for the remainder of the year. 

Studies Languages– Airman Paul V. Dwyer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Dwyer of Oakfield has been assigned to the Defense Language Institute on the West Coast, Monterey, California. After his six weeks of training at the Air Training Command’s Lackland AFB in Texas, he was assigned to the mail section, awaiting orders, and served as head personnel in his section. The Airman has been assigned to the West Coast school to learn foreign languages. He is a 1973 graduate of Oakfield High School.

Houlton, Hodgdon girls undefeated, local basketball teams working hard – “It was a great win,” said Houlton Lady Shires’ Coach Jerry Tweedie of his team’s 51-47 victory over Bucksport last Saturday. “We knew coming in that this was going to be a tough game,” he said. With the win over Bucksport, the Lady Shires remain undefeated early in the season. In other girl’s action, Holly Quint was the high scorer in Hodgdon’s last two victories over Madawaska 47-36 and Central Aroostook (49-28), as the Lady Hawks remained undefeated. Against Madawaska, Quint fired up a game-high 20 points, while Amy Wallace netted 12 more. The Lady Hawks led 8-7 after the first stanza and 20-15 at half- time. The Lady Hawks overtook the Owls with a 17-8 third quarter scoring run en route to the victory.
