Houlton Shires Win – Local boy’s basketball teams were in action as last weekend marked the official opening of the regular high school season. On Friday night, the Houlton Shiretowners made their home debut. They picked up a 58-48 win over Madawaska. The Shiretowners struggled early, trailing the Owls 10-4 to open the game. The teams played evenly through the second quarter, as Madawaska held a one-point lead at half-time. Coach Jerry Adams said, “In the first half, the basket had a lid on it. But, I was impressed by how the kids stayed composed and played much better in the second half.” During their half-time talk Adams said he told his players they were “doing a good job, but they had to play with more intensity and that they were too anxious and needed to be a bit more patient.” In the third  quarter, Shiretowners took charge of the game. They outscored their opponents 22-12 to pull ahead 47-38 and never looked back. The Shiretowners also outrebounded the Owls 38-22 in the game.
