Light parade makes Main Street in Presque Isle festive

A few flakes drifted down on a warm Saturday night as hundreds of people packed Presque Isle’s Main Street for the annual Holiday Light Parade.

Trucks, tractors and floats of all kinds sported colorful displays, while marchers decked out in lit garlands passed out candy to kids on the sidelines.

The Central Aroostook Chamber of Commerce organized the annual event, which featured about 75 units. Some, like nativity scenes and a Star of David with a menorah, reflected the deeper meaning of the holiday season. Others featured lighthearted displays.

Sparky the Fire Dog, Smokey Bear, the Grinch and numerous other characters joined in the fun — and, to the crowd’s delight, a sheep trotted along with a 4-H group.

And of course, as they have done every year through the parade’s history, Santa and Mrs. Claus appeared as the finale to the hour long spectacle, this year in a brightly lit cabin.

United Insurance won the grand prize, the chamber announced yesterday on social media. Other awards went to Thompson Financial Group, best business; Aroostook County 4-H, best nonprofit; Washburn Pentecostal Church, best faith-based group; and general, Pine Street Elementary School.
