FORT KENT, Maine – Route 11 in Fort Kent was closed due to a tractor trailer that was stuck on the road, according to a statement from the National Weather Service in Caribou. Officials with both the Fort Kent Police Department and Maine State Police said on Thursday afternoon that the road has since been cleared for travel, but were unable to provide further information about the status of the tractor trailer truck.
The statement also alerted motorists that brief heavy snow showers have caused roads to become slippery throughout the area. The weather service is asking people in the area to drive carefully, as the current conditions will lead to reduced visibility and slick roads.
“Moderate to heavy snow is already impacting roads across the St. John Valley with quickly accumulating snow. The snow showers may reduce visibilities to less than a mile at times,” the statement read. “Snow will quickly cover roads and sidewalks producing slippery conditions.”
These conditions are expected to last up until early evening.
“Reduce speed, increase braking distance and have your headlights on,” the weather statement concluded.
