Middle school-age football players wanted
Aroostook Football’s middle school program is in need of more players if it is to compete in a league this fall.
According to head coach Jon Frederick, only four players have registered for the seventh- and eighth-grade team, which is open to players throughout central Aroostook County and is part of an 8 vs. 8 league that also includes teams from Houlton, Millinocket and Madawaska. He said a minimum of 12 players are needed to field a team.
Last year’s squad went undefeated, but 14 of the team’s 19 players have moved onto the high school division. Two others have moved away and two have decided to play on a school sports team this fall.
The season is scheduled to begin Aug. 19 and Frederick is hoping he can generate enough interest well before that date. The team practices Tuesdays and Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings. Games, which take place Saturdays, begin Sept. 13 and are held at Caribou’s Sincock Field.
He added that the middle school program is designed to teach the fundamentals of football and prepare players for the high school level.
“Aroostook Football is based on life values and our time is devoted to not only creating football players, but solid young men,” Frederick said, noting that the organization last year implemented USA Football’s Heads Up Tackling program, which stresses sound tackling fundamentals that reduce helmet impacts during tackling and helps prevent concussions.
