PRESQUE ISLE, Maine – As you know, Presque Isle will be in the midst of a total solar eclipse on Monday, April 8. The eclipse will begin at 2:22 p.m. reaching totality at 3:33 p.m. and coming to an end at 4:40 p.m. Special viewing glasses are required to safely view the eclipse.

The City of Presque Isle is partnering with Presque Isle High School’s National Honor Society to sell these special glasses. Glasses are being sold at the cost of $3 each with proceeds benefiting the local National Honor Society’s campaign to raise money to attend their state conference. To purchase the glasses, you may reserve them online and then pick them up at the high school between 7:30 and 8 a.m. or 2:45 and 3:15 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. In addition, there is a limited number of glasses available for sale in the public information officer’s office on the second floor of City Hall.

Between 10,000 and 40,000 visitors are expected to visit our area for this event. Although solar eclipses take place roughly every year and a half, a total solar eclipse taking place in our area will not occur again for another 375 years. There are five designated viewing areas also known as “star parks” in the Presque Isle area. Special events are also being planned around the eclipse.
