Youngsters share recipes – The pupils of Room 102 at Acadia School had a wonderful learning experience Wednesday, Jan. 16, 1974. With the cooperation of Mrs. Dawn Houghton, the home economics teacher, 15 youngsters learned to make sweet muffins. The children learned the correct procedures for preparing, serving and cleaning up after cooking their muffins. After viewing the demonstration, each group of three children went to work at their units.

Warden, police divers take an icy plunge – Twenty divers from the Maine State Police and Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife dive teams spent two days on Eagle Lake, taking part in joint ice diving and related training. For them, last week’s below-zero temperatures were near perfect. The crew moved offshore about 500 feet to cut two holes through the foot-thick layer of ice on the lake. The Maine State Police dive instructor said that when divers are called in, it is for body recovery operations rather than rescue. He said that the state is just too big to have divers at every body of water.

Rossignol beats father’s record — With a 24-point performance in Van Buren’s 52-34 win over Southern Aroostook on Monday, Jan. 20, 2014, senior Parise Rossignol became the Van Buren District High School all-time leading basketball scorer. The record was previously held by her father, Matt Rossignol, who scored 2,257 points as a Crusader. Rossignol has 2,269 points as of Monday. Rossignol plans to join the University of Maine Lady Black Bears in the fall.
