Ricker Strong For Opponents; Triple Wins Added to Record – During the week from January 29 to February 4, the Raiders from Ricker Junior College rolled over three more opponents to run their string to fourteen wins in fifteen games. The first victim was Higgins Classical Institute of Charleston. The Ricker five playing on a foreign court had some trouble finding the range with their shots and found themselves on the short end of a 33-31 score at the half time intermission. The second half saw the Ricker team, led by Trafton and Hickson, score a total of forty-five points and won going away 76-65.

Houlton Girls Advance In Tourney At Schenck – The Houlton High School girls basketball team won its first game Friday, in an invitational tournament at Schenck High in East Millinocket, playing an undefeated Stearns team and finishing with a final score of 48-45.
Monument Lodge Honors Its Senior Grand Warden – Monument Lodge 96 of Houlton honored Herschel K. McIntosh of the local lodge, who is presently serving as senior Grand Warden of the Grand Lodge of Maine, Saturday evening at the Masonic Temple. Principal speaker of the evening was Charles R. Glassmire of Portland, Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Maine. Other distinguished guests included Malcolm R. Holts, past senior grand warden from Washburn, and Wallace H. Campbell of Fort Fairfield, past grand master.

Parker reaches hoop milestone – East Grand High School senior Nic Parker wasn’t going to miss his final high school basketball game, despite suffering torn ligaments in his knee. So, he strapped on a knee brace and took to the hardwood at East Grand’s gymnasium in what Parker thought was just another contest. Unbeknownst to him, a new chapter in school history was written on Friday, Feb 5. After 27 years, Parker, son of Fred and Kristi Parker of Danforth, became only the second male in East Grand School history to reach the 1,000 point mark. The last player to achieve that feat was Dennis White in 1972.
Hodgdon Youth serves as usher at Governor King’s Inauguration – Josh Bishop, a sophomore at Hodgdon High School, served as an usher on Jan. 7, at the Governor’s Inauguration at the Civic Center in Augusta. Bishop was one of more than 50 students from the state of Maine. Their primary duty was to lead people to their seats as they came in. Bishop said that he most enjoyed “the Stratton Elementary steel drum band which played at the inauguration.”
