Main Street in Washburn was blocked off the weekend of Aug. 15-17 for Washburn’s 34th annual August Festival. The rain held off for the outdoor Movie Night on Friday and again Saturday morning for the parade, with the sun managing to peak through for a while in the afternoon.
This year’s August Festival was a great success, thanks to the August Festival Committee and the many community members who supported the Festival and came out to celebrate. There was a great turnout with many people from the surrounding area who came to Washburn for the events.
The music was great throughout the festival with country/bluegrass, karaoke, rock, and gospel performed. There was lots of good food, a friendly and polite atmosphere and fun, games, arts and crafts for the kids.
The town outdid itself this year on Saturday with an amazing 20-minute fireworks display, there were even a few nice firework displays that could be seen coming from some of the residences prior to the town’s show. Events concluded on Sunday with St. Catherine’s annual luncheon and in the afternoon with the yearly gospel concert at the high school.
Thank you everyone for making this such a pleasurable event with activities enjoyed by all age groups and for the friendly and welcoming atmosphere provided to all those visiting our town.School board vacancy

Visit school
The pre-kindergarten and kindergarten children and their parents at Washburn District Elementary School enjoyed a visit to the school on Tuesday, Aug. 19. The school provided cookies and juice in the cafeteria where they were introduced to the principal, Mrs. Cote, the pre-kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Bragg, the kindergarten teachers, Mrs. Skinner and Mrs. Good, and the teacher aids.
This was followed by a visit to their classrooms where they had a chance to look around and ask questions. There was a tour of the school with a visit to the library, gym, and music room. The tour ended with a short bus ride around town. It was a pleasant experience and a chance to calm some of the fears of the new students who will have their very first day of school on Monday, Aug. 25.
TOPS meeting
TOPS Chapter 0331 of Washburn had a table to sell tickets for a 50/50 raffle as a fundraiser for their chapter on Saturday, Aug. 23. TOPS is a nonprofit, and through the year they have small fundraisers to cover expenses for the Chapter.
TOPS would like to take this opportunity to thank the gentleman that was the winner of this 50/50 raffle. He was so generous, donating his part of the winnings back to the Chapter, which was totally and completely unexpected and so very much appreciated. This will be a huge help in covering the Chapter expenses. Thank you so very much!
Birthdays/anniversaries
Those celebrating a birthday between Aug. 27 and Sept. 2 include: Jenesa Ingraham, Sandy Buckingham, Justin Farley, Tiffany Bragg, Tiffany Carter, Rodney Tarbox, Nolan Cunningham, Dan Robertson, Jennifer Olson and Conrad Helton.
Those celebrating an anniversary between Aug. 27 and Sept. 2 include: Mike and Peggy Kelley, Joe and Germaine Whitten, Loren and Judy Johnson, Rodney and Shelley Chavez, and Mark and Debbie Tarr.
