120 Years Ago – May 19, 1904

Off to Washington to make purchases — Geo. F. Reynolds left last week for Seattle Wash., where he will purchase machinery with which to operate the mines of the Caribou Mining Company in Alaska. Roland Sutherland, accompanied by T. E. Hale, will leave next Monday, joining Mr. Reynolds in Seattle from where the party will go on to Alaska.

Taking a leave of absence — Beecher F. Churchill who has been employed as night operator at the B. & A. station for the past two years has a four months leave of absence on account of his health. His place will be filled for the present by Mr. McAllister, relief agent. Mr. Churchill has accepted a position as assistant manager of the Singer Sewing Machine office in this place and entered upon his duties yesterday.

115 Years Ago – May 20, 1909

Lowell has an automobile — E. L. Lowell of the Mars Hill View is the second newspaper man in the county to have an automobile. Bro. Fogg of the Houlton Times being the first. Mr. Lowell now rides about the county in a Ford runabout.It is wrong and naughty to envy the good fortune of others, and so we don’t; but we cannot help wishing we had an automobile.

New switchboard needed — The Aroostook Telephone & Telegraph Company have now over 600 subscribers at the Caribou central, and new customers are being added steadily. On account of the increase in business the company has installed a new six-position switchboard..

100 Years Ago – May 15, 1924

Business is doing well — The Caribou Greenhouse, L. A. Hutchinson, proprietor, which has been established but little over a year, is enjoying a steady and rapidly increasing business. Saturday last has required the services of six assistants to take care of the numerous orders for Mother’s Day. The service rendered by this new establishment is always prompt and satisfactory.

Logs on the move — On Saturday afternoon the booms of the Madawaska Lumber Company on the St. John river, situated 15 miles above Van Buren broke and let loose about six million feet of logs. Seven of the piers were carried along with the logs. The logs were stopped by the booms of the St. John Lumber Company at Violette siding about five miles below Van Buren.

75 Years Ago – May 19, 1949

Auto registration offices to be located in Caribou — Caribou has been selected officially for the location of the state’s new automobile registration bureau, which, after being in operation in Presque Isle for the past 25 years, will move here sometime Friday or Saturday. Temporary quarters will be furnished by the Bureau at the Nylander Museum building on South Main street, until a new building, constructed according to specifications submitted by the Bureau, can be erected.

Build 15 new homes here — Caribou’s Building Inspector, Ernest J. Pelletier reported yesterday that construction in town was again on the seasonal ‘upswing’ with 25 building permits being issued from March 24 to May 18. The number of new houses, 15, to be built out-numbered all other types of construction, Pelletier said. Three garages, four outside renovation jobs, each exceeding $500; one industrial plant, the Birds-Eye Snider French Fry addition, an office and an outdoor theater complete the classification of Caribou’s new construction.

Hospital to build center — As the Cary Medical Center approaches its 50th year of service, the hospital is planning to open a women and children’s health center. Hospital officials announced last week that construction of the 3,000-square foot addition and the 7,000 square foot remodeling project will begin in June. The new center will be more than just a place to see your doctor for an appointment, support groups, small group lecture series, programs on domestic violence, breastfeeding support, breast cancer prevention and support and services for teens.

Molly Bouchard, Amber Fisher — Eight year old Molly Lynn Bouchard was crowned 1999 Little Miss New Sweden and 12-year old Amber Elizabeth Fisher was named 1999 Jr. Miss New Sweden Saturday night at the New Sweden school. Bouchard is the daughter of Jeffrey and Bonnie Bouichard. Fisher is the daughter of Herman and Karla Fisher.
