Ice perils Allagash bridge – THE Allagash bridge over the St. John River had a huge ice jam that threatened to destroy the bridge on April 24, 1974. But warm weather and gentle rains during the week melted the ice enough to break the jam and ease the pressure from the bridge. High water flooded parts of Allagash and St. Francis, forcing several residents to evacuate their homes and closing the Allagash School for a day or so.
