99 Years Ago – June 11, 1925
Rev. French attended the Advent conference — Rev. O. S. French of Fort Fairfield, 93 years of age, was in town Tuesday, on his way to attend the Advent conference at Castle Hill. During his stay in town, he was the guest of Rev. J. B. Ranger. Mr. French was in fairly good health and quite active considering his advanced age. The year before, he completed the manuscript of a 200-page book, in which he reviewed his ministerial experience in a very interesting manner. The work of typewriting the manuscript was all done by himself.
50 Years Ago – June 12, 1974
Mrs. Morris retired after 43 years in education — Mrs. G. Caroline Morris, guidance counselor at Ashland Community High School, retired after 43 years in education. Mrs. Morris had been active in state and county associations, having held offices and served on several committees. She was honored at the state meeting of Maine Personnel and Guidance Association at Thomas College in Waterville. Citations were made and Mrs. Morris was presented with a life membership in the association.
Bank elected two directors on board — At the regular monthly meeting of the Northern National Bank Board of Directors, Frank Carroll was elected a director to fill the vacancy created by the death of R. W. MacIntosh. Carroll was a former member of the bank’s Advisory Board. Hugo A. Olore Jr. was appointed a member of the Advisory Board to replace Carroll. Carroll, a civic-minded businessman, owned and operated Carroll’s Auto Sales in Presque Isle and was also president of K-M Radio, Inc. and a director of Green Hills, Inc. He had served as a member of the Presque Isle City Council and Presque Isle Industrial Council. Odore had been associated with the firm of Phllips, Olore and Walker in Presque Isle since 1953. He was an attorney for Northern National Bank, solicitor for the city of Presque Isle, and a member of the Board of Trustees of A. R. Gould Memorial Hospital, a member of the Board of Directors of Presque Isle Community Boys Camp, a member of the Presque Isle Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Presque Isle, Aroostook County, State of Maine and American Bar Association.
25 Years Ago – June 16, 1999
Winners — WalMart held its Children’s Miracle Network raffle with two packages valued at over $11,300. All merchandise for the raffle was donated by local merchants. The drawings were held April 30 and the winners were Melissa Cote from Mars Hill and Lori Hamilton from Cariou.
Employee recognition — The Aroostook Medical Center, HORIZONS Health Services and TESCO recognized over 100 employees during National Hospital Week. Following a luncheon, staff received certificates and pins for reaching milestones in years of employment with TAMC Inc. organizations. Being recognized were Sherry Mantlow (10 years), Fred LaFrancis (10), Karen Carmichael (10), Alan Dunn (10), Gail Sutherland (10), Peggy Flewelling (10), Belinda Thibodeau (10), Gene Hathaway (10), Cindy Deschaine (10), Lisa Willey (10), and TAMC’s Payroll Clerk Marlene (40).
$435 donation — Sheila Schellenger from the Caribou Volunteer Fire Department accepted a $435 check from Geoff Dyer at Time Warner Cable that was used in the department’s Caribou Toy Project at Christmastime. Time Warner donated annually to the holiday project.
New Eagle Scouts — Three young men were honored May 8 at an Eagle Scout Ceremony in Mars Hill, Dennis McCartney, Rob Collins and Arlie Wiggins. Between the three boys, their Eagle Scout Projects took over 845 hours.
