WASHBURN NEWS
by Beth Boddy
The students at Washburn District High School wanted to join the ALS fundraising efforts sweeping across the country, so on Tuesday, Aug. 28, the students took up the Ice Bucket Challenge.
Now they are challenging their neighbors to join the cause and help raise money for ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, often referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease, a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells). They have officially challenged Caribou High School, Presque Isle High School, along with their rivals Fort Fairfield, Central Aroostook, Ashland, and Easton to take on the Ice Bucket Challenge.
Their challenge posted on the MSAD 45 website reads as follows (please take tongue-in-cheek): “So Caribou, get with it; PI — you are hesitant to scrimmage us but you may want to join with us for this cause; Fort, are you real tigers or just little kitty cats; Mars Hill, are you ferocious panthers or just PINK panthers; Easton, are you real bears or just little kids’ cuddle toys; and Ashland, are you stingers or stinkers? “
If you’d like to see how Washburn handled the challenge, you can check out a video of the event on the school website at MSAD45.net.
The Big Red Rack
There’s a new service in town. White’s Service in Washburn has added state-of-the-art alignment equipment at its Main Street facility, believed to be the first of its kind in town service station history. The equipment has been in operation for nearly three weeks, and after a bit of investigation, it has been found that this is the very first one of any type of alignment apparatus to be in Washburn.
The former “pit” area of White’s garage was filled in to make room for the new addition which also doubles as a lift, to be used for some regular auto repairs. Due to the nature of many auto repairs, alignments are necessary and previously customers had to be sent out of town for this service. The new rack will enable Washburn residents to remain in town for this service as well as possibly bring new customers to Washburn.
Both owner Andy White and his son, Drew White, are being trained on the various ins and outs of the machine and have had good results for their customers.
The garage staff welcomes people to stop by and check out the modern addition to the garage.
Historical Society and Rotary fundraiser
Representatives of the Salmon Brook Historical Society joined the Washburn Rotary Club meeting on Aug. 27. The Historical Society has several immediate financial needs, the most expensive being a new furnace for the museum.
To raise money for this expense the two groups are working together to put on a bean supper on Saturday, Oct. 18, featuring homemade goodies made by excellent local cooks.
The supper will be at the Trailrunners’ clubhouse in Washburn. Everyone is welcome to attend. Please help support our museum which is a wonderful jewel right in our home town. More details to follow — hope to see you there.
ATV Club hot dog roast
The Washburn ATV Club will be hosting another hot dog roast, which will be held on Sunday, Sept. 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., rain or shine. They will be serving red and brown hot dogs, McCain French fries, cupcakes, soda, bottled water, coffee and hot chocolate. Cost is by donation and all proceeds will go to building a new clubhouse.
They will also be doing a 50/50 drawing; the lucky winner does not have to be present to win and the lucky ticket will be drawn at 2 p.m.
The ATV clubhouse is located in the old red barn behind Country Farms Market on Gould Street. There will be signs posted along the trails.
We thank you for your support!
