Van Buren students explore local industry

In a collaborative effort to provide students with exposure to advanced technical education and local industry opportunities, three career and technical education students from Van Buren District School recently visited Northern Maine Community College and VALT Enterprizes Inc. in Presque Isle.

The students were accompanied by HVAC instructor Mr. Ouellette and engineering teacher Mr. Barbosa. The experience was made possible with the support of the Van Buren administration and financial assistance from a MELMAC grant.

The educational tour began at Northern Maine Community College, where the students delved into the computer aided machining certificate program. Mr. Duplessis and Ms. Raegyn Chavez, admissions counselor, provided a comprehensive and detailed tour of the campus. Students observed the advanced computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing  technologies, gaining insight into the skills needed for careers in this innovative field.

Following this, the group explored NMCC’s wind power technology program. This program equips students with the knowledge and skills to maintain and operate wind turbines, highlighting the importance of renewable energy. The students were captivated by the program’s focus on sustainable energy solutions and the technological advancements in the field of wind power.

The visit to NMCC was instrumental in broadening the students’ understanding of technical education pathways and potential career opportunities.

The day concluded with a visit to VALT Enterprizes Inc., which specializes in rocket technology. The students were given an informative tour, showcasing the company’s cutting-edge developments in aerospace engineering. The staff at VALT ENTERPRIZES provided detailed explanations of their projects, inspiring the students with the possibilities of careers in aerospace.

Mr. Ouellette and Mr. Barbosa expressed their gratitude to both NMCC and VALT ENTERPRIZES for hosting the visits. “These hands-on experiences are crucial for our students, as they provide a glimpse into the real-world applications of their studies and help them envision their future careers,” said Mr. Ouellette.

Mr. Barbosa added, “Seeing advanced technologies and meeting industry professionals firsthand motivates our students to pursue their passions and consider the educational pathways to achieve their goals.”

This educational trip was a significant experience for the students, who returned with increased enthusiasm for their studies and a clearer understanding of the opportunities available in the technical and engineering fields.

On May 21, Mr. Duplessis, NMCC Teacher, and Mr. Kameron McGill, SHRM-CP, Human Resources Director & AFSO at VALT ENTERPRIZES, Inc., visited the Van Buren CTE programs. After a two-hour tour and discussion, they agreed to work together in finding opportunities to link programs and enhance educational and career pathways for students.

Students interested in high school or college-level Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs are encouraged to speak with their career counselor for more information.
