99 Years Ago – July 23, 1925

Enviable record of life insurance achievement — The business of the Security Mutual Life Insurance Company of Binghamton, N.Y., represented in Aroostook by M. X. Beaulieu had grown to such proportions that the company’s president, who was here July 11th, had decided to recognize Mr. Beaulieu’s successful efforts by leasing for him the fine suite of offices in the Boone Block. The company;s Roster of Achievement, published monthly, for the month of June, showed that Mr. Beaulieu was the ninth man on the list on the month’s business, and seventh in order for the country as a whole. Mr. and Mrs. A. Roix, who joined the force two months prior, had made a most enviable record of achievement, being 31st in the list out of a thousand in the employment of the company. She was also the only lady agent who had qualified during the month of June for the special honor roll.

50 Years Ago – July 24, 1974

Dr. N. Varnum appointed to the manpower pool — A Presque Isle optometrist, Dr. Norman Varnum, was appointed a member of a manpower pool within the Professional Development Division of the American Optometric Association, it was announced by the organization’s president, Dr. B. J. Shannon of Mauston, Wisconsin. Dr. Varnum was called during the year to serve on various project teams appointed to carry out a specific task within the division. The AOA Professional Development Division assisted in coordinating and expanding professional services offered by the individual practitioner, with emphasis on clinical methods and administrative management. The 18,750 member American Optometric Association represented the nation’s largest vision care profession which is headquartered in St. Louis, MO.

New Potato Queen — Miss Patricia Cyr, 17, of Madawaska, the daughter of Mrs. Yolande Desmarais and Philip Cyr, was crowned Potato Queen over the weekend at the 27th annual Maine Potato Blossom Festival in Fort Fairfield. 

A. R. Gould’s administrator announced — Burtt F. Brown, president of the board of trustees of A. R. Gould Memorial Hospital announced the addition to the staff of Stanley F. Lowrey, 34, a native of Texas. He replaced Victor E. Costanzo as hospital administrator. Lowrey held a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Texas in Austin in 1963. He obtained his masters degree in hospital administration from Duke University, Durham, N.C., in 1965. Following completion of the two-year academic program at Duke, Lowrey enrolled in an extended one-year post-graduate residency at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. He then joined the administrative staff at Hermann Hospital in Houston, a large teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Texas medical school.

25 Years Ago – July 28, 1999

Easton’s McDougal won a pair of competitions — Regular racing continued July 18 for the ’Roostook County Car Club, which held radio-control car races for cars and trucks at the Aroostook Centre Mall parking lot. In the 10th-scale stock class, Ray Vogel of Caribou took the checkered flag, with Jason Theriault, also of Caribou, placing second. Jim Krysiak of Presque Isle was third, followed by Tim Otis of Westfield and Mike Vaillancourt of Portage. Tim Otis came back to take the pro truck competition. Bryan Pelletier of Caribou and Paula Otis of Westfield were second and third, respectively. In the monster truck category, Ralph McDougal of Easton prevailed, with Eugene McDougal of Fort Fairfield next and George Bultez of Presque Isle placing in third position. Vogel made it a double-victory day with a win in the gas truck event. Krysiak took second, Vaillancourt third, Theriault fourth and Marcel Bosse of Caribou fifth. Ralph McDougal outraced Dan Moreau of Monticello for the title in the legends race, while Mike Sands of Caribou was too much for Westfield’s Leroy Otis in the four-wheel drive class.

Check presentation — Gail and Louis Roiux presented a check of $500 to Dana M. Swett, Trustee of Northern Maine Fair. Gail and Louis believed in the future of the lumber industry in Northern Maine, thus they wanted to be a part of the Forestry Resource Council Building being constructed at the Northern Maine Fairgrounds.

Donations left and right — Roger Hoffses of Hoffses Auto Sales, along with Scott Hoffses of U-Save Auto Rental, presented Dana Swett, Fair Trustee, with a generous donation toward the Forestry REsource Council Building being constructed on the Northern Maine Fairgrounds.Pledge presentation — William A. Smythe, President of Smythe IGA Plus, presented Dane M. Swett, Fair Trustee, a pledge of $1,000 on behalf of Peggy and Bill Smythe toward the construction of the Forestry Resource Council Building being constructed at the Northern Maine Fairgrounds.
