Dunleady was named to Voices In Vital America — State Representative James P. Dunleavy was asked to join the Honorary Advisory Committee of Voices in Vital America, a national non-profit, non-political, education and charitable organization dedicated to making the American public aware of the plight of our POWs and MIAs and of their families. Dunleavy agreed to join the organization and expressed the hope that state officials would do likewise. He was willing to furnish buttons, brochures and bumper stickers to any Aroostook residents who requested them free of charge.

New grant — The Mapleton Sewer District was awarded a grant of $7,000 for one year under the federal Comprehensive Employment and Training Act manpower program. The funds were to be used for employment purposes, hiring a full-time operator for the town’s new sewage treatment plant. Although the sewer district originally had budgeted for a full-time plant operator, this was changed to a part-time operator when district trustees cut the 1974 budget in an attempt to keep costs down. However, according to district officials, a full-time operator was needed at the sewer plant at least for its first year of operation to facilitate implementation of the sewage system. Joel Good, who held a class two operator’s license for sewage treatment plants, was the plant’s new operator.

Loring received national development awards — By geography, Aroostook County is at the end of the line in the U.S., but the Loring Development Authority hadn’t let location stand in the way of competing nationwide. The development agency was given two awards of excellence (second place) and one honorable mention at the national Association of Installation Developers 1999 Annual Conference. Both Brian Hamel, LDA president and Mary Walton, assistant to the president were present at the Jacksonville, Florida event. The materials that brought the agency recognition were locally conceived and created. The Loring Commerce Centre website, designed by Oak Leaf Systems Inc. of Presque Isle, earned an excellence award. The second excellence award was given for a black and white advertisement “Loring Line Art,” that was created in-house.

The concert featured a mix of musical talent, ranging from Heart & Soul’s folk sounds to the Dangerous State Street Band’s rock and roll. Lots of people attended. Local Girl Scout troops did face painting. Families and friends took the park’s canoes and paddle boats out for  jaunt on the lake.
