50 Years Ago — Aug. 21, 1974

  First solo – Glen Wylie of Frenchville, soloed at Northern Maine Regional Airport, Frenchville, last week in August of 1974, after 13 hours of instruction. Wylie is the first student to solo with Valley Flying Service Inc., fixed-base operator at the Frenchville airport. Wylie’s instructor was Bob Theriault, a certified flying instructor. Theriault promptly tore off Wylie’s shirt-tail, in the time-honored custom for newly-soloed flight trainees.

25 Years Ago — August 25, 1999

Miss Greater Madawaska – Loni Sirois, 17 of St. Agatha, was crowned the 1999 Miss Greater Madawaska during a recent ceremony in St. Agatha. Sirois had been named the first runner-up during the May Miss Madawaska pageant and was crowned the new queen following the naming of Miss Greater Madawaska Angelique Bourgoin as this year’s Maine Potato Blossom Queen. 

10 Years Ago — August 20, 2014 

Positive impact after CMA 2014 — Senators Angus King and Susan Collins participated in Grand Tintamarre in Madawaska. The noise parade drew 10,000 spectators and participants, according to the 2014 World Acadian Congress organizers. The festival featured ployes, and live music. Liam Greenlaw of Madawaska, won second place at the Madawaska Acadian Festivals’ ploye eating competition. The contest was part of daylong music and festivities at Bicentennial Park. Volunteers cooked up ployes for the contes and spectators.
