United Methodist Women

On Monday, Sept. 5, the monthly meeting of the Mars Hill United Methodist Women met in the church vestry at noon with seven members and three guests present. After the blessing, sandwiches were enjoyed with chips and hot and cold drinks. Ice cream sundaes were served with homemade butterscotch sauce and pound cake made by Frances Banks and Clara Hussey.
President Donna Brewer turned the meeting over to program Chairperson Clara Hussey. Frances Banks was co-chairperson but was unable to attend due to sickness. Clara read two very humorous readings on “getting old.”
Frances arranged for the special speaker, Steve Hitchcock, to speak about the Historical Society work in the Mars Hill and Blaine area. He read the names of the many volunteers and spoke about the various work and programs to be done.
The most interesting part of his presentation was the quilt made over 117 years ago by ladies in Mars Hill and surrounding towns. The quilt was found and purchased at a garage sale in Arizona by a woman from Connecticut. She was able to contact Steve, who made arrangements to bring the quilt “home.” It will be on display at the Historical Society when it opens.
Steve was accompanied by his wife, Sheryl. The UMW presented Steve with a check to help support the Historical Society.
President Donna then conducted the business meeting by leading all in the Prayer of Invocation and Purpose Prayer. The secretary’s report was read and accepted as read. Diane Ketchum gave the treasurer’s report and read the correspondence. It was voted to buy a TV for the Sunday school.
The annual Northern District UMW meeting will be held in Limestone on Saturday, Oct. 4. Anyone interested in attending is asked to get in touch with Elaine Bailey.
The group discussed the annual Fall Fair, which will be held on Saturday, Nov. 8.
Members attending included: Donna Brewer, Elaine Bailey, Diane Ketchum, Joan Walsh, Joan Boone, Daisy Campbell and Clara Hussey. Guests were Steve and Sheryl Hitchcock and Margaret Yeager.

She gave an update of where they are in the process of the project. They are completing the design, with two routes being considered. They plan to submit permits this fall. Hopefully construction would begin in the fall of 2015, with completion by the fall of 2016.
