PRESQUE ISLE — Central Aroostook Association, known for its services for individuals with developmental disabilities, has been a long-standing pillar in central Aroostook for over five decades. In fact, 2014 marks its 55-year anniversary. To commemorate, celebrate, and toast the past and future years, the association will be hosting an old-fashioned potluck supper.
Decades ago, when it was known as Central Aroostook ARC, the association would host potluck suppers on a regular basis, with several parents and staff in attendance. They were always held in the original building built on the Lombard Street “campus,” which was dubbed Opportunity Training Center until a couple years ago when it was changed to OTC, special purpose private school. The potlucks were always a hit, though busy schedules and outside demands led to a decline in their regularity. Years went by without the beloved gatherings, yet two years ago the association decided to revisit the potlucks, and did so with much success.
But this potluck is special in that its purpose is to do more than allow parents, caregivers, staff and individuals to socialize, enjoy a good meal, and hear about the work of the association. This event’s theme is primarily the association’s history but also its evolution, from its inception through the ages to what it has become today. There will be a number of speakers, most of whom carry a historical perspective from which many can learn.
A timeline of events will be posted, in addition to other pieces that will reflect and observe the years since the founding of the association. The event will be held Thursday, Oct. 16 at 5:30 p.m. at OTC, special purpose private school. RSVPs are due Oct. 8. The number of guests is restricted to 80 due to space limitations. A roast, rolls and beverages will be provided while, in true potluck fashion, guests are invited to bring their favorite family dishes and desserts.
