Aroostook honored to host Chinese students
To the editor:
I feel sorry for the Chinese students that may have to deal with small-minded folk like last week’s letter writer. He can’t see past the nose on his face and will make comments, judge through stereotypes, and take it out on the young teenage population who so bravely left the comforts of their home, to land in a community where you (citizen) only see them as forced upon you.
Upon their stay here, they will be made fun of. They will have racial slurs thrown at them. They want nothing more than to experience an American culture. Despite these small-minded gestures, they will learn here. They are trusting our community and school district to take good care of them.
They are spending money in our community. They are learning from our students. I haven’t heard of any students yet brandishing weapons and killing of our population up here. I haven’t heard of any cults where they are brainwashing our student body of communist ways. They are here to learn … that’s what school is … an educational institution.
Quote from the letter: “Who says “diversity” of this type is a good thing in a nation where we barely remember our own roots …” I am a bit rusty on my history but this country was formed on a population of immigrants. The Chinese also helped build the transcontinental railways. They aren’t asking to take over “The County.” They are coming to experience our way of life. I find that rather flattering that our community gets that honor.
I hope with all your displeasure for the “communist” ways that you don’t shop at Walmart, Dollar Tree, Name Brand stores … where most products are manufactured by the, gasp, Chinese.
