WASHBURN, Maine — Police are considering a theft during Monday night’s storm to be a crime of opportunity.
“Chandler Dobson, of Washburn, lost control of his vehicle due to poor road conditions, going off Route 164 — Caribou side of town — near the intersection with the Lake Road. His vehicle was far enough off the road it was determined to not be a traffic hazard. But while it was there, someone removed property from the vehicle,” said Chief Roy Guidry, of the Washburn Police Department.
Guidry believes someone may have stopped at first to help but subsequently removed the radio and other items.
“They may have stopped to provide aid but, seeing no one with the vehicle, took it upon themselves to remove the stereo equipment,” said Guidry. “We believe the vehicle was unlocked. But who thinks to lock their vehicle when you’re in a ditch during a snow storm?”
Dobson posted a detailed description of the stolen property on the WPD’s Facebook page, asking for the public’s help in recovering the equipment. Taken were a Sony radio and a VM Audio package. Anyone with information is asked to call the WPD at 455-4043.
