PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Presque Isle Historical Society’s “Holly Jolly Molly the Trolley” will be one of the many entries in this year’s Holiday Light Parade. But unlike other entries whose riders are from a specific business or organization, the trolley is open to the public to ride the parade route.
“A couple of years ago a local resident approached the Historical Society and said she wished she knew someone who had a float in the Holiday Light Parade as her grandson really wanted to ride in the parade. When she was told of the Historical Society’s ‘Holly Trolley’ — whereby she could buy tickets to ride on the trolley in the parade — both she and her grandson were thrilled,” said Kim Smith, secretary/treasurer of the Historical Society.
This will be the third year the organization has offered the Holly Trolley “experience,” noted Smith.
“There are now people who have made this trolley ride a part of their annual holiday tradition and have participated every year. Presque Isle’s Holiday Light Parade takes place on Saturday, Dec. 6, and there have already been tickets sold for the trolley event,” said Craig Green, president of the Society’s board of directors.
Smith said this is a perfect opportunity to enjoy the season’s festivities with friends and family.
“As the old Christmas carol goes, ‘Have a holly jolly Christmas; it’s the best time of the year. Well, I don’t know if there’ll be snow, but have a cup of cheer.’ Riders aboard the Holly Trolley, in addition to experiencing the parade as an insider and then pulling over to watch the rest of the parade go by, can also listen to Christmas carols and enjoy Christmas cookies and cider,” said Smith.
The trolley only seats 32, so seats are limited.
“Tickets are $10 each. Tickets typically go fairly quickly. Anyone interested in having a holly jolly Christmas with the Presque Isle Historical Society should call to reserve a spot today. Boarding will be promptly at 5 p.m. at the parade lineup site at UMPI,” said Smith.
The parade starts at 6 p.m. Riders will be returned to their cars at UMPI following the parade.
Proceeds support the Society’s various programs. For more information or to make a reservation, call 762-1151, visit www.pihistory.org or email pihistoricalsociety@hotmail.com.
