ACAP receives Rite Aid grant
Officials with Aroostook County Action Program have announced the agency has received a $5,000 grant from the Rite Aid Foundation to support the school-based sealant program.
This program serves all second- and third-grade students in Aroostook County.
“We travel to each of the 28 schools that we serve and set up a mobile dental clinic,” explained Crystal Cummings, ACAP Family Services – Oral Health. “We provide dental screenings for each student whose parent has signed them up for the program. We place sealants on the children’s molars and apply fluoride varnish to their teeth. After one year we re-check their teeth and reseal the molars as needed.
“In addition, we inform parents about any problems with their child’s teeth and give referrals to students who do not have a dental home,” she added.
“We are grateful to the Rite Aid Foundation for investing in our dental program,” said Sue Powers, senior manager of ACAP Family Services. “Each year we serve several thousand children and this gift will go a long way in helping us provide services.
“Many families cannot afford regular check-ups. While this free service cannot replace the importance of regular dental care, it is a preventive measure that can provide some peace of mind,” Powers added.
