HILL, David Adrian, 66, CHAPMAN, at Bangor, December 4, 2014. A celebration of his life will take place 2 p.m., December 20, at the Presque Isle Elks Lodge #1954, Presque Isle. Arrangements are under the care of the Duncan-Graves Funeral Home, Presque Isle.
CHAPMAN – David Adrian Hill, 66, passed away on December 4, 2014, in Bangor, but his contagious smile and his hilarious stubbornness will never be forgotten. He was born on July 12, 1948, in Blaine, the only son born to the late Montford and Bridget Hill (Labillois).
Adoringly known as Big Daddy Dave by his family and many special friends, he was a meat cutter by trade, a hell of a cook, and the biggest New York Yankee fan you’ve ever met. In 1971, he married the first love of life, Denise Grenier Hill, to whom he was married for 27 years.
He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army and fought as a hero in Vietnam. He was a Crew Chief Cobra for aircraft repair where he earned the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and two Oversea Bars.
He had a distinct disdain for cigarette butts in his driveway, roaming charges, taxi cab drivers, and fried rice. But Big Daddy Dave had so many loves, too. He loved his wife, Denise fiercely, who predeceased him in 1998. He also had an unwavering love for his children and grandchildren. His emphatic stubbornness and no-holds- barred opinions were a couple of his best qualities that he graciously instilled and passed down to his children. Shane Hill, of Wade, ME, secured the “holy cow, did he just say that” sense of humor and a frugal attitude just like his father. Kelly Hill Langley, of Chapman, ME, seemed to inherit his sleep talking habit and his love of baseball. Michael Hill of Chapman, who predeceased him in 2003, was perhaps the luckiest child, as he learned to dance just as his father and light the room with his flirtatious smile. Libby Hill, of Chapman, ME, also predeceased Dave in 2003, and was a mini Dave. Her ability to “tell it like it is” was a direct reflection of her father.
After graduating from Presque Isle High School and attending some college, Dave worked as a meat cutter for most of his life. Anyone who wanted great steaks knew to call Dave. Those who actually wanted to eat the best steaks sat on Dave’s deck and watched him grill.
Dave was extremely proud of his grandchildren and was like a crusty whoopie pie when it came to them. A little tough on the outside but so soft and mushy on the inside. Trevor Hill (14), Hannah Kilcollins (12), Michael Hill (9), Evan Hill (7), Caleb Ouellette (11), Chase Langley (11), Benjamin Langley (6). Grampy Dave stocked up on candy and chicken nuggets, bought a giant swimming pool, and a great vacuum for when his little loves visited.
Dave also loved lemon pie, westerns, the New England Patriots, Cocoa Beach Florida, being a member of both the VFW and the Presque Isle Elks lodge, sitting in the sun, raising hell, his leather recliner, baseball hats, the word “whatnot”, the Rockland Blues festival, going out in the woods, and listening to music.
He was beyond fortunate to find his second love in life, Linda Smith. He adored her and proposed to her at the last annual Davefest. The couple were to be married in February of 2015. Linda brought the families together by combining her five sons, (known as the Kelley Boys) Chad, Adam, Nason, Ryan and Jarvis.
He was as supportive as a father would be and a best friend to his son-in-law, James Langley. They shared many years as more than just father and son-in-law. He will also be sadly missed by a special daughter-in-law, Stephanie Kilcollins Hill. He had many special friends that were like brothers to him.
A special Thank You for loving Dave goes out to Dave Pelkey, Pete DeCarlo, Walter Gogan, Herschel Higgins, Wendell Saucier, Billy Davis, Jimmy Boutot, Brian Arsenault and a very special cousin, Kevin Labillois and his wife, Lynn.
A celebration of Dave’s life will take place 2 p.m., December 20, 2014, at the Presque Isle Elks Lodge #1954, 508 Main St., Presque Isle. Donations may be made in Dave’s honor in support of his family, c/o Kelly Langley, 2300 Chapman Road, Chapman, 04757. Online condolences may be expressed at www.duncan-graves.com.
