Beavers record key win over Bears
The Washburn Beavers have separated themselves as the top Class D team in the region following Monday’s win over Easton.
Coach Randy Norsworthy’s team is now 5-0 after jumping out to a big lead early against the Bears at “The Barn” in Easton. The Beavers had their lowest scoring output of the season, but are still averaging more than 80 points per game.
The Fort Fairfield boys suffered their first loss, by a mere four points to a powerful Southern Aroostook team in Dyer Brook Monday, while the Ashland Hornets finally hit the win column after beginning the season losing three straight.
In the Class B ranks, Presque Isle was off to a 1-3 start following Monday’s loss at Fort Kent. The team had a make-up contest against Hermon yesterday and will entertain Ellsworth and Mount Desert Island in back-to-back games Monday and Tuesday.
Summaries of games played Dec. 16-22 are as follows:
Washburn 58, Easton 49 — The visiting Beavers built a 21-9 first-quarter lead, then held off a late comeback by the Bears to grab their fifth win of the season without a loss Monday.
Washburn was led by Noah Caron’s 14 points and Jarrett Olson’s 13.
Jake Flewelling led 3-2 Easton with a game-high 21 points. Cody Halvorson added 14 points and Logan Halvorson posted 10.
Ashland Community 59, Madawaska 32 —Cody Blair connected for a game-high 29 points Monday to carry the Hornets past the Owls Monday in Ashland. Michael Cook chipped in with eight points as Ashland won for the first time this year after opening with three consecutive losses.
Greg Cyr’s 13 points led Madawaska.
Fort Kent 68, Presque Isle 54 —Ryan Chasse poured in 24 points to spark the Warriors to their fourth win of the season, topping the Wildcats at home Monday.
Matt Daigle scored 15 points for Fort Kent, while Brandon Theriault and Anthony Desjardins posted 12 points each.
Andrew Paterson led Presque Isle with 15 points, including three three-pointers, and Connor Murchison tossed in 13, 10 of which came in the second quarter. PI dropped to 1-3 with the loss.
Central Aroostook 77, Wisdom 54 — At Mars Hill Monday, Cameron Todd scored 20 points to lead the Panthers to victory.
Dustin Pryor tallied 18 points and Riley McGrath scored 10, while Nick Dominique and Zach Crouch added nine points each for Central Aroostook of Mars Hill.
Dominic Roy paced Wisdom of St. Agatha with 15 points.
Foxcroft boys 54, Presque Isle 38 — Drew Dankert scored 18 points, including four three-pointers, to lead the Foxcroft Academy Ponies to the home victory over Presque Isle Saturday. Nick Clawson and Hunter Smith each added 12 points for the winners.
Chase Norton led the Wildcats with 10 points and Andrew Paterson nailed three three-pointers for all nine of his points. PI was within seven after three quarters, but were outscored in the fourth, 17-8.
Presque Isle 50, John Bapst 45 (OT) — At Presque Isle Friday, Paterson’s three-pointer put the Wildcats ahead for good in overtime as they edged the Crusaders.
Ben Buckley posted a double-double for Presque Isle with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Paterson finished with 11 points.
Alex Mooney paced 0-4 John Bapst of Bangor with 13 points and Nick Lakeman chipped in with 11.
Katahdin 75, Central Aroostook 60 — At Stacyville, the Cougars grabbed an early first-quarter lead and never relinquished it while downing the Panthers.
CA closed to within a point at the end of the first, but going into halftime the Cougars held onto a 38-27 lead. Katahdin hit a good percentage of its foul shots to close out the game and claim the win.
Nick Lane and Tyson Porter paced Katahdin with 21 and 20 points, respectively.
For Central Aroostook, Pryor led the way with 21 points and Clark Bradbury added 15 points, including a pair of three-pointers. McGrath chipped in with eight points.
Easton 72, Hodgdon 45 — At Easton last Wednesday, the Bears used a 20-2 run to start the first quarter and never looked back. The home team was led by Logan Halvorson’s game-high 19 points, including five three-pointers.
Jake Flewelling chipped in with 15 points for Easton.
Hodgdon was paced by Devin Quint’s 12 points.
