Hockey team at 1-4-1
Presque Isle played to a 2-2 deadlock at home against a strong Brewer team Saturday in varsity hockey action at the Forum, using a late goal by Alex Michaud to force a tie.
Cooper Madore assisted on Michaud’s goal, which came with just 47 seconds to play in the third period. The teams played to a scoreless overtime. Michaud had also scored PI’s first goal, with Denny Young and Joe Patenaude contributing assists, to give the hosts the lead after one period.
Zachary Duncan tied it for Brewer with a second-period goal before Caleb Eggert scored midway through the third to give the Witches the edge before Michaud’s late heroics.
“I was very happy because when we fell behind 2-1, we had been outplaying Brewer at the time so I was afraid we would lose our will to fight and then give up a couple more goals as we had done in previous games,” Flynn said. “That wasn’t the case as we kept pressuring their defense.”
Jillian Flynn saved 40 of 42 shots in goal for PI, while Brewer’s Tyler Griel had 24 saves on 26 shots.
“She played an excellent game and made several key saves in the first two periods to keep us in the game,” said coach Flynn.
Brewer had entered the game with wins in all four of their contests to begin the season.
Last Tuesday at Sawyer Arena in Bangor, Sam Lander racked up 25 saves to lead the John Bapst Crusaders to the 5-1 victory over the Wildcats.
Jon Cheff and Joe Pate each scored two goals to pace John Bapst and Tyler Wheeler tallied one goal.
Young netted the goal for Presque Isle off a Madore assist. The Wildcats received 21 saves from Flynn in goal.
“Our young defense finally got exposed in a fast-paced game and their inexperience showed,” said the coach.
The ’Cats fell to 1-4-1 following Tuesday’s 7-2 home loss to Winslow. Cooper Madore and Austin Bouchard scored for PI, with Flynn making 26 saves in the contest.
