FORT KENT – Martin Bernstein, chief executive officer at Northern Maine Medical Center, has announced the arrival of gynecology physician Ellen Michalowski, MD, as the newest member of the NMMC medical staff.
“On behalf of the entire staff of NMMC, it is my pleasure to welcome Dr. Michalowski to the St. John Valley,” he said. “Dr. Michalowski is familiar with Aroostook County, provides exceptional care, and maintains a strong rapport with her patients. She will be a valuable asset to this area.”
Michalowski begins her new practice in Fort Kent with 12 years experience in central Aroostook County, six years of practice in Arizona, and two years as a clinical assistant professor. Prior to her relocation to Maine, she completed her residency and Doctor of Medicine degree at the University of Arizona, along with her undergraduate and post-graduate education.
Her practice vision is to provide an avenue and resource for information and comfortable atmosphere in conjunction with the care of patients. An immediate goal is to establish a women’s health center that promotes healthy lifestyles and common practices that suit the needs of various ages and multiple generations, resulting in high-level care for women throughout their life span.
The convenience and necessity of Michalowski’s practice will create a convenient avenue to specialized health care and individualized needs of women in northern Maine. During a recent interview, Michalowski noted, “The Valley residents commonly frequent central Aroostook County for services and the St. John Valley area is clearly underserved.”
When asked of the determining factors for the transition north, she stated, “This is a natural transition and great opportunity to start a practice and take on responsibilities of day-to-day operations. In the past, I’ve worked for a practice rather than operating my own. Northern Maine Medical Center has been gracious to provide housing during the week so I can be closer to my patients in the interim.”
Plans to permanently relocate to the area will take place once her youngest of three children finishes her last year of middle school in Presque Isle, at which time her daughter and husband, John, will join her.
Michalowski will start her practice Oct. 23. She will begin seeing all gynecological patients and will take referrals for high-risk obstetric patients at NMMC starting Oct. 30. She is encouraging the continuation of services to current patients and accepting new patients. An appointment can be made by calling 834-3060.
