Mars Hill’s oldest resident, Juanita Rideout, turned 100 years young on Jan. 14 with a surprise party arranged by Dr. Olugbemi at the Aroostook Health Center. She also enjoyed a second party with family members at Governor’s Restaurant in Presque Isle on Jan. 18.
About 30 relatives gathered in the party room. After singing “Happy Birthday,” they sat down and enjoyed a delicious dinner of roast turkey, stuffed haddock or ham with all the fixin’s. A beautiful birthday cake was presented. Many pictures were taken and memories renewed.
Juanita lives at home with her son Duane and continues to help around the house as she is able.
Those attending were: Anna Marie Rideout, Stephanie Rideout, Thomas Fargeorge, Eva Fargeorge and Gianna Gamble — all from Connecticut; Celeste Fargeorge from South Carolina; Madelaine Frgeorge of Pennsylvania; Angelo and Sharon Dagnello of Massachusetts; Dana and Joanne Crory and Duane Rideout of Mars Hill; Gladys Henderson of Houlton; Deborah, Cory, Tonya, Taia and Alyssa Tilley of E Plantation; Travis, Melissa, Devin, Keagan and Skylynne Tilley and Donnie and Nancy Beals of Blaine; and Lawrence and Gail Beals of Mars Hill. Son Richard and Betty Rideout were unable to attend.
Rotary Club
The Mars Hill Rotary Club met on Tuesday, Feb. 3, at 6:30 a.m. at the Aroostook Health Center. The special speakers were Bart Bradbury and Gregg Garrison. They showed pictures and videos that were taken during a trip they took to Argentina from Jan. 16-26. Arranged by McCain’s, they went with a group of area growers from Maine and New Brunswick, as well as some McCain personnel.
They visited farms in the Buenos Aires area to see their methods of potato seed cutting and storage, as well as harvesting practices. With land quite flat and not rocky at all, the harvesters were able to go quite quickly. Their equipment was not nearly as advanced as what is currently used in the U.S. and Canada.
Other crops grown in Argentina include: sunflowers, soybeans, corn and wheat. The crops are irrigated using wells. They are able to plant over a three-month period and harvest for six months.
McCain’s has a french fry processing plant in the area, which the group was also able to visit.
Library news
For the safety of the patrons, the library was closed beginning Jan. 12 and will remain closed until the ceiling and lighting replacement is completed.

Upcoming events for the week of Feb. 11-17 include: Wednesday will feature the Beauty Parlor at 8:30 a.m., Morning Stretch at 9:30 a.m. and Crossword Puzzle Challenge at 1:30 p.m. Thursday will feature Beauty Parlor at 8:30 a.m., Bingo at 9:30 a.m., Valentine Couples Date at 12:30 p.m. and United Methodist at 6:30 p.m. Friday will feature Valentine Jingo at 9:30 a.m. and Karaoke with Larry and Larry — Valentine Party at 1:30 p.m. Saturday is Valentine’s Day and will be a free day with movies, puzzles and games available in the dayroom. Sunday will feature Full Gospel Assembly at 3 p.m. Monday is President’s Day and will be a free day. Tuesday will feature the Beauty Parlor at 8:30 a.m., Bingo at 9:30 a.m. and Communion at 1:30 p.m. All of these activities are subject to change. If you would like to volunteer to help with any of these activities, call Connie or Vicki at 768-4915.
BINGO
The William Cousins Post 118 of Mars Hill is hosting BINGO every Saturday evening from 7 p.m. until done. There are cash prizes. Refreshments are available. Come on out and enjoy a fun evening with friends!
